IN January we continued our guest photographer workshop series with French writer and photographer Jehanne de Champvallon!
Our "Writers as Photographers" workshop "Songs of Innocence" explored William Blake and his writings and ideas about the themes of innocence, beauty, fear, power and corruption, as applied to the photographic vision of French author and photographer Jehanne de Champvallon, who led the workshop.
Jehanne's approach is that each photograph, or series of photographs should tell a story, just as she would do as a writer. The workshop participants learned how the craft of being a writer and photography can complement each other.
During the workshop, Jehanne discussed how she begins with a story as a writer, and then as photographer, proceeds to tell the story in an image or series of images, including using the art nude as a form of expression. Photographers will had the opportunity to photography the story and model under Jehanne's direction, so that they can experience and experiment with this novel approach to photography.
The themes she will explored were selected from William Blake's work as follows:
I) SONGS OF INNOCENCE AND SONGS OF EXPERIENCE - Showing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul… as exemplified by the two poems The Lamb (innocence) and The Tyger (beautiful and fearsome). Jehanne worked with our model to portray these contrasting states of nature; as both Virgin Mary and femme fatale..
II) THE CHIMNEY SWEEPER.. the nature of innocent and corruption and the tension between them… as illustrated with the model.
III) The ABSURDITY OF LIFE and the absence of God in Blake's work
Jehanne demonstrated the process with Chikara Moth, the model she selected for this workshop.
Helmut Newton once said “Every photographer is a voyeur, if he says he’s not, he’s a liar.”
Well, we were in luck because we had Zoe West visiting the Cattail Studio from New York, and she agreed to be our model for a workshop exploring "The Photographer as Voyeur." If you’ve seen Zoe's portfolio, you know that she not only is a model, but also brings a tremendous range of expression and feeling to her work with photographers.
The 3 hour workshop/shoot explored the Photographer as Voyeur theme, with Zoe in various natural and studio light settings. The Cattail Studio location with it’s living/dining room with fireplace, bedroom and master bath are a great setting for this workshop!
After the workshop, there were 1 on 1 sessions available with Zoe with some great results!

The workshop "Dark Sisters - Double Exposure" will explore the literary genres of gothic, supernatural and science fiction, as interpreted by Jehanne, who will lead the workshop with two outstanding models.

"The New Erotic Photography..." is the title of a book edited by Dian Hanson and fetish photographer Eric Kroll (Taschen) that presents the erotic work of 50 contemporary photographers.
This is not Playboy glamour that gets boring very quickly, or Hustler that is just sleazy… The essence of the “new erotic photography” is fresh and unique, it's sexy and suggestive, but classy, artistic and tasteful. Today as photographers we are increasingly called upon to produce images that are the "new erotic photography."
This three hour workshop (7 pm to 10 pm) is an introduction into how to capture new erotic art images for the art collector, photo enthusiast or voyeur. We will cover how to plan for, set up and carry out your work, including the basics of lighting and posing the erotic art nude. You will also see examples of the work of great photographers who have contributed to this genre, such as Ralph Gibson, Eric Kroll, Jan Saudek, Terry Richardson, Petter Hegre, Richard Kern, and Bob Carlos Clarke.
Our model for the workshop will be Johanna an artistic, uninhibited European model, who is excited about working with you to build her erotic art photography portfolio. You can see examples of her work at:
The workshop will be conducted in our boudoir studio, and is limited to 6 photographers.
The workshop will cover the following topics:
A. Posing the Model for Erotic Art Photography
- We will show a series of poses that go to, but do not cross the line :)
- Use of props to increase the erotic nature of the image.
B. Basic lighting set ups for erotic art photography for:
- hard, high contrast images
- soft light with wrap around effects
- bounce light for high key effects
C. You will learn how to use studio lighting equipment:
